One Hundred Images - Blissful Snowstorm

In this blog series I am telling the stories of 100 of my favorite images, how I came to be there, what it was like and why I still enjoy the image. For image 26 of the series I'm remembering the blissful state of mind that can be obtained in the Australian alpine region.

Blissful Snowstorm

15 July 2012. Mt Selwyn, NSW. Australia

For Australians, snow is a rarity only found in a very small area and only at the right time of the year, this makes it difficult to create images of the unique Australian landscape in snow. I made this image while on holiday with my family introducing my kids to the snow for the first time, on the first day of our visit we were frustrated by totally bare ground - no good for tobogganing! The next day however we found the ground at Mt Selwyn coated with a nice fresh layer of snow and over the course of the morning my kids reminded me that they have vastly more energy than I do for walking up and down hills. When they (finally) started to get cold and tired the family retired to the clubhouse and I took the opportunity to explore the area around the ski resort.

It didn't take long to be away from the bustle of the ski resort and within the bush. Here a quiet, calm tranquility came over me. The air felt clear and crisp and my senses heightened to the shapes and textures of the world around. As I slowly made my way through the land looking for images to create the perfection of the scene was completed when a light snow shower started to fall. I felt blessed to experience an event so unique in this country and the solitude of my surrounds made me feel as though it had been created just for me. In large prints of this image you can see the snow falling through the scene and it immerses me back into those same feelings of tranquility that I had in 2012.

Creating fine prints is my favorite part of photography, sharing the ultimate expression of an image with someone who will cherish it for years to come brings me great satisfaction. If you would like to purchase a print please contact me, prints from this series start at just $100.
