In this blog series I am telling the stories of 100 of my favorite images, how I came to be there, what it was like and why I still enjoy the image. For image 10 of the series we are exploring Merewether Beach at Newcastle, NSW.
27 November 2007. Merewether Beach, Newcastle, NSW. Australia.
Many photographers head to Merewether Ocean Baths for sunrise and I certainly have done so on a few occasions. Few, however venture further south along the beach. One sunny afternoon I ventured past the baths in search of a new image to make and found some beautiful rock formations that reacted perfectly with the sand and the water. I found one that particularly interested my eye so I made careful note of where it was and decided to come back at sunrise the next morning. When I made my way back it was almost like that scene has disappeared! The tide was further out so it wasn't covered by water and I spent much time searching up and down the beach for it. As the sun started to near the horizon I decided to give up on my desired location and look for a new image to make. I quickly found this area in the rocks where the water would rush in and over my feet then out again. I really likes the moss on this particular rock and I also noticed that when the water got high enough the outflow off the rock in the background created dozens of little waterfalls. The sun was rapidly approaching so I setup quickly and waited for the water to perform right in front of me, I was quite glad that it did just that right before the sun came up!
I really like the softness of the blue water, this image is also a little cold - your feet will go a little numb in the water of a cold November morning! I also like the uncluttered sky as it keeps your attention on the shape and colour of the moss in the foreground as well as the subtle way that the water flows off the water in the mid-ground.
Creating fine prints is my favorite part of photography, sharing the ultimate expression of an image with someone who will cherish it for years to come brings me great satisfaction. If you would like to purchase a print please contact me, prints from this series start at just $100.
