In this blog series I am telling the stories of 100 of my favorite images, how I came to be there, what it was like and why I still enjoy the image. For image 8 of the series we are exploring the ocean baths at Coalcliff, NSW.
11 March 2007. Coalcliff, New South Wales. Australia
After 7 successful posts I had my first break in this series due to overseas travel with work. The camera came with me but didn't come out of the bag (except for airport security) because I don't always get to visit the most photogenic of places!
On a trip to visit my family in 2007 we went to see the rather famous sea cliff bridge. This whole area of coastline south of Sydney is beautiful with steep cliffs towering above the ocean below. As we explored the area around the bridge we found the town of Coalcliff and I drove around looking for an area where I could shoot the ocean with the cliffs in the background. Somehow I stumbled upon a park with the ocean baths nestled against the water, it was stunning and offered so many photographic opportunities. I returned at sunrise the next morning, now my early morning outings are usually a solo affair for obvious reasons but for this one I was joined by my mother and sister. The greatest challenge at Coalcliff baths was not finding a composition, it was choosing which ones to shoot out of all those offered!
A clear morning is not normally conducive to great images but in this case it gave a great blue sky with a beautiful reflection of the colour in the water. The cliffs are subtly lit by the approaching sun as this image was taken just the top of the orb started to broach the horizon. One thing that I love about this image is that the bottom of the baths is quite mossy and on the left side of the image you can see some green of the moss coming through with the blue of the reflected sky.
I really love this image for how the detail of the cliffs is set against a clear sky, the cliffs tower over the sea and perched on top of the cliffs are tiny houses that get to take in this view everyday.
Creating fine prints is my favorite part of photography, sharing the ultimate expression of an image with someone who will cherish it for years to come brings me great satisfaction. If you would like to purchase a print please contact me, prints from this series start at just $100.
