Sunrise over Ubud Rice Terraces – February 2017 Print Of The Month

In June last year my family and I took a holiday to Bali, it was the second time that we had been over there and I was keen to spend a day entirely focused on photography. Thanks to a friend I was put in touch with a tour guide and amateur photographer who would be my guide for the day. I really wanted to get out to the rice terraces for sunrise so a 4:30 am start was in order to find a spot and get the good light! The first location we went to was a bit of a bust – I learnt that the terraces are constantly changing and depending on where they are in the harvest cycle will depend on what you see.

The sun was starting to come up as we drove down to a second location, I was starting to worry that we had missed the best light but Made (Mar-day) my guide was confident. Good thing that he was quick on his feet – I had stopped at one spot that was ‘ok’ and Made had gone ahead, he came back quickly – he had found the best spot! We both settled in this location as the light started to shine into the valley – there was hardly anyone around and I knew then and there that I had the shot.

2016-1023. Ubud Rice Terraces, Bali. Limited Edition Print

I must confess that I also sacrificed a good pair of shoes that day – the paths are narrow and I fell into the rice paddy’s about 5 times! Saved my gear though 🙂 You can see more of my images from Bali here.

This A3+ sized image (16×10.66 inches exact image size) comes mounted on foam core and matted to 20×16 inches. This is a standard size so it is easy to frame! This limited edition print would normally be $400 but for orders placed during the month of February it will be only $250! To order, simply message me through the contact page and let me know your address so that I can quote shipping and handling costs. Payment can be made through PayPal or direct deposit.

Stunning Sunset At Nightcliff, Darwin

When you get stunning colours for a Top End sunset it can last for only a few short minutes. You need to be in the right place, at the right time and a little lucky to catch it! I was set up in this spot all ready and still only got off a few frames before the light disappearred. That’s all you need though.

This image is available as a limited edition print or canvas, please contact me for pricing.

Sunset Over Darwin Harbour From East Point

It’s been hot and we haven’t had any rain to help temper the humidity of the wet season so by the time I got to this location I was soaked in sweat! Before I arrived at this location I had been in an area shielded from the breeze but as soon as I stepped out of the car here I was met by the cool breeze coming off the water and the promise of a beautiful sunset. This part of East Point can be difficult to photograph, it’s a great place to watch the sunset but it can be difficult to find foreground-background compositions that I like to use. Luckily, I have been here before so I used some tried and true compositions as well as experimenting with some new ideas as the light faded away for the day.

Tree Overhanging Yellow River – Kakadu National Park

I booked a sunset cruise on the Yellow River as part of my trip to Kakadu. The good thing about being in the park on a weekday during the off-season? You get the boat to yourself! It also turned out that the tour guide is also a photographer so he was more than happy to move into places that got the best shot. Two hours just flew by, we had some interesting light, great scenery and diverse animals. Here is a shot I really like of the way that the trees interact with the water, there was so much to shoot – there will be more to come!

Gerlache Strait, Antrctica

I thought I’d take break from all the images of warm sunsets over Northern Australia beaches and look through some shots from my Antarctica trip in 2013. Talk about a different environment! I found an image that I had always like and done some processing on but I had never released it before. After a few adjustments I made a print and was really impressed by it (I might make a bigger print soon). I still remember the day that I took this, the crew opened up the forecastle of the ship while we were sailing to our first activity of the day. This was a great place to shoot from compared to the upper decks because it was a lot closer to the water  and gave a different perspective. We were a long way south by now and there was pack ice everywhere, only a few people came out to the forecastle so all was quiet as we inched our way forward. The stillness was only broken by the odd sound of ice scraping against the hull of the ship. Despite how it looks, it was very cold – the breeze plus the movement of the ship added to the chill but I was prepared to brave the conditions !

Orange Sunset At Darwin Beach

Clear, cloudless days mean boring sunsets, right? In the NT you can get these but you can also get really vivid displays of orange, yellow and red after the sun has dipped below the horizon. I used some of the large boulders on Vestey’s Beach to frame the action of the water against the rocks.

Fish and Chips

Last night I took the family out for fish and chips and the sunset at Nightcliff. While we were waiting I snapped this little beauty of the sunset light shining on the cliffs with my Fuji X-E2. This morning I started to edit this image, after trying a lot of my favourite processing techniques I found that this image didn’t really need any processing!
