Driftwood at Dripstone, Darwin NT

The waves can bring back to the land something that had found its way into the sea but perhaps only for a short period before it is swept back out again. Dripstone Beach, Darwin NT. Australia.

Long Exposure and High Tide at Dripstone, Darwin NT.

It was well and truly dark by this stage but I stayed put for one last exposure. This was taken on the landing of the stairs that you use to get down to the beach, with the sun gone I didn’t have to contend with people walking up and down the stairs and shaking the camera!

Sunset light on Dripstone Cliffs. Darwin NT Australia.

When the tide is high the water brings in a lot of sea shells but on this shoot it was the first time that I’ve seen the effect that the shells have on the out going water from the waves. These were really difficult to photograph because you’d get set up in a spot to photograph a nice cluster of shells then a large wave would come through and move them all into a different spot! I was really happy with this one shot, especially how the sun was poking through a hole in the clouds to light up the cliff in the background.

Stunning Sunset At Nightcliff, Darwin

When you get stunning colours for a Top End sunset it can last for only a few short minutes. You need to be in the right place, at the right time and a little lucky to catch it! I was set up in this spot all ready and still only got off a few frames before the light disappearred. That’s all you need though.

This image is available as a limited edition print or canvas, please contact me for pricing.

Orange Sunset At Darwin Beach

Clear, cloudless days mean boring sunsets, right? In the NT you can get these but you can also get really vivid displays of orange, yellow and red after the sun has dipped below the horizon. I used some of the large boulders on Vestey’s Beach to frame the action of the water against the rocks.

Highs from Lows

I’ve heard of artists who created their greatest works during the lowest times of their lives. That’s not me though, I need a lot to align in order to be ready to shoot, process or post images, otherwise I stay staring blankly at a screen with no idea what to do. A few weeks of hard work and a family medical emergency mean that I’m out of the time and energy I need to create something great but I got a quick flash of inspiration tonight. With this inspiration I’ve been able to make a few prints and I found this image – partially processed – of Nightcliff. I got it finished off tonight, just before my personal fuel gauge started to show low again.

Bar Beach

2006 doesn’t seem that long ago, but after looking back through some old files I found this gem of an image. With a much easier job and no kids to take up much of my time and energy I was able to get out to shoot the sunrise every month with my trusty old Canon 300D. The relatively low 6 mega pixels, high sensor noise and narrow dynamic range of the 300D seem so antiquated when I edit the files now but when you have a clear vision for the image and you take it using the proper technique the tools you use become far less important to the final output.

Back Into It!

This year has been a great year for photography, I’ve done more shoots than ever before and a lot more positive work on the business side of things. But around mid-August I ran out of steam, so much that I put the camera away, neglected Lightroom and didn’t pick it back up again until last weekend. I didn’t stop on purpose and I didn’t set a time to pick it back up again so it kind of felt natural and now it feels good to be back into the swing of things!

First photo is one I took down at the (not very) Snowy Mountains. I liked it but initially couldn’t get it to look how I wanted, trying again after time away from Lightroom and I instantly knew what to do. I hope you like the stark barren trees against the unforgiving sky.

Next photo is from Tanilba Bay, late in the afternoon I knew the conditions were right for a good sunset. I was right but nature has a way of surprising you – soft smooth colour appeared on the eastern horizon away from the sun giving me a totally unexpected but not unwelcome change in scenery.

Next up is a scene that I have been trying to capture for a while now. Down at Lemon Tree Passage there is a few sections of boardwalk through the bush. I have always liked how the trees seem to be reaching up to you when you walk along and it’s taken a few goes to capture that feeling. I think I’ve finally done it with this shot.

Last up for today is the sunset at Shoal Bay. I came and setup my equipment so that I got the last light of the day on the hills and I was really happy to see that the waves had left their curves in the sand, mirroring the curves of the hills behind the bay. Great symmetry.
