Web Site Update

A small but important update to the web site today, you can now browse my gallery by location as well as style. This should make it a little easier to find an image from a particular area. I’ve also added a gallery where you can view every image on the site in case you just want to see them all! While I was in the mood I also fixed up all the place name captions, somehow a lot of them had fallen off (sorry!).

Expanding On Social Media

I’m getting my act together, joining the 21st century and making sure I have a bigger presence on social media. I’d resisted some sites before but I’m starting to see their worth and I now have an idea of what I might do on each of these sites. The share buttons on my blog are now up to date so here is a list of what I contribute to and why:

Instagram
I’m going to start using Instagram for behind the scenes photos of me on location and editing. I might even throw up a few draft edits of pictures that I have captured but not yet processed – Instagram filters might be a good way to disguise the final product 🙂

Twitter
What I’m reading and quick links to posts that I’ve made on other sites. I read a lot of blogs and photography news sites so when an article gets my interest I’ll share it so you can get an idea of what inspires me and what I use to improve my work.

Facebook
New image releases and links to blog posts will go up here, Facebook is ubiquitous now so this will mostly be my own work up here (I’ll leave link sharing to Twitter) that way if you follow me on Facebook you’ll know that you will just be seeing my work.

500px
What I like about 500px is the high quality contributions of the community there. I go there more to get inspiration rather than to contribute, my images do get posted there so follow me if you want to use 500px for you own inspiration!

Flickr
This community is so large I think I could just post there and forget about everything else!

Use the links above or the icons to the right to follow me on any of these sites, if you want to leave your own social media profile links below I will return a follow as well. Is there any other sites that you think that I should be contributing to?

Nightcliff Beach Outflow

I’ve had a great time lately, getting out to shoot a lot of different locations and as a result I’ve barely had time to process all the images I think are worthy of production let alone write and post here. So this post will be a short introduction for an image I took of a fantastic sunset at Nightcliff, it’s rare to get a sunset like this during the dry season so I was very lucky that I got there early and saw the sky building over a few hours. After some slow contemplative shooting the sky turned bright pink and I spend a furious 20 minutes making the most of it and the beach. I got a lot of really nice images but this one immediately stood out for the simplicity of the foreground, the colours and the white flow of the water. If only I could find time to make a test print.

New Web Site!

It’s been a long time coming but I’ve finally gotten around to updating this site. The old site was not mobile friendly and google recently changed their search engine rankings so that your site would appear further down the rankings if your site was not mobile friendly. The old design was starting to look a little tired so I’ve gone with a much more impressive design, the whole site is run on Word Press so updating it will be a little easier and much more interactive, allowing readers to comment and share pages easily. Let me know if you have any issues with the site (or see any typo’s…)

I’ve also decided to get serious about blogging, I used to only post here once I added images to my portfolio – about every 3 months. Now I will be updating the blog weekly.

Enjoy! More images and other content to come soon 🙂

Roma

2015-0081-Panorama

Roma, QLD. 2015-0081

As you drive into Roma from Toowoomba there is a small bridge that crosses a creek that would normally be bone dry, but this year two remarkably different weather events conspired to make a normally un-remarkable feature into a stunning Australian landscape. First of all there had been a small fire here, some of the trees and ground had been burnt a few months before but when I drove through enough time had transpired to see some new growth. The second weather event to shape this image is the water. In the day or two prior to taking this shot the water must have been rushing through here and had risen up to where I was standing to take this shot. Thankfully, when I came through it had subsided and presented the scene that you see above. This image is made by digitally stitching multiple images together with some Orton effect thrown in to soften the grass and leaves in the background.

Great Weather

We’ve had a lot of great weather lately, sun, rain, wind – we’ve had it all. When the weather cleared last Monday we got the kinds of clear skies that you only get after a lot of rain and when the sun set it was an amazing show of colour on the western horizon.

What a storm!

Shoal Bay Jetty, NSW. 2014-3149

Shoal Bay Jetty, NSW. 2014-3149

I was very lucky to be out at Shoal Bay last Sunday shooting the beach there when a fantastic storm rolled in. As it got close I sought refuge in the car and waited for it to go over before I got out and grabbed a few frames of the jetty before the storm died out.

Capturing lightning is such a thrill, it takes planning, technique and lots of patience. When you get it all right (and get very lucky) the results are great.

My first book is out!

To celebrate the 10th year of my photography I’ve made a book of over 70 of my favourite images. It’s taken a year to get it all together so I’m very excited to be able to finally get it on the (digital) shelves!

New Images!

I posted up some new images yesterday. I have taken these over the last few months so without further ado here are the new Limited Edition releases.

Tanilba Bay, NSW. 2013-1618

The first shot is from Tanilba Bay in 2013. I loved the shot at the time but completely forgot to post it up!

Clarence Town, NSW. 2014-0836

Clarence Town, NSW. 2014-0836

This one is from a morning shoot near Clarence Town. I wanted to get back to capture some of the more iconic Australian bush scene and with a lot of recent rain it was pretty green out there. I took a bit of inspiration from the classic Australian landscape painters and went with brighter and lower contrast skies for these images.

I love living in a country where people just rig up a swing on a tree branch near the water. If my kids had been with me I’m sure they would have wanted a go.

A few more open edition prints from these shoots:

This last shot is from a spot I discovered in 2005. Still stunning and the trees have grown a lot.

Portfolio Update

With a gloomy rainy Saturday it’s a good opportunity to update my portfolio with some new shots for the website. While I put my images up on Facebook and 500px regularly, I only put an image into my web site portfolio after much consideration so you might find some images on those sites that a are not here. It’s an important skill for an artist to know how to put a portfolio together, to pick the couple of shots that are the best representations of your style and who wants to see 100 photos that are almost the same?

This first shot is from Mallabulla, on Port Stephens. I live just around the corner from here so it’s great to see a nice sunset developing then rust out with my gear. This is one of the most complex cloud scenes that I’ve seen here and the tide was rushing in at the same time to make the scene more dynamic.

The next two images are from Fishermans Bay, I’ve visited this place a few times. The rock formations are very interested so I’ve decided to do a detailed study of the area. Another cloudy day made for some interesting skies and once the sun set it was a great opportunity to do some long exposures and accentuate the moss on the rocks at low tide. Normally you can’t get to the spot where I took the second image but at low tide on a calm day it was easily accessible for a short while!

After much deliberation, I’ve decided to add a few more images from my Grand Canyon trip. The first image is from the helicopter flight to the canyon and the last is while we were flying out after out time on the ground. Have a look at my video from the trip to see what it was like! Grand Canyon on YouTube.

The next two shots were taken back in January on a sweltering hot 42 degree day. I had decided to go for a drive and took my camera along even though I did not expect to get any portfolio grade shots in the middle of the day. I came across a great winding road that twisted up into the hills, the sky was quite hazy from a bushfire in the distance so I stopped at the top of a couple of hills to take a few shots. I was quite surprised with the results, the hazy sky recreated the feeling of a hot, dry country day quite well.

Another shot from Fishermans Bay but with a much different sky! I don’t think there is much more that needs to be said 🙂

The next two shots are from an area devastated by bush fires late last year. I had to capture the devastation, surprisingly even though it had only been two weeks since the fire – some of the trees were growing again!

Lastly, I took this shot almost a year ago now. I don’t know why I have waited this long to put it on the web site but there is just so much chaos going on!
