Cottesloe Beach Golden Sunset

My wife graduated from her second university last week and because she has been studying externally this meant a trip down to Perth for the graduation! I’ve never been to Perth before but with a hectic schedule I only had limited time to take the camera out. I’ve seen plenty of images of Cottesloe Beach before and I didn’t really want to create another cliched image so I stayed on the beach for this image, nice and close to the surf club.

Wet Season Grass – Rapid Creek NT

Took the Mamiya RB67 out a few weeks ago for a shoot around Rapid Creek in the middle of the day. This is not usually the best light for photography but I was out during a break in storms so there was some nice soft light. There is a lot of lush green grass at this time of year and this section stood out for the ‘tall poppy’ that shines above the rest!

Sunrise over Ubud Rice Terraces – February 2017 Print Of The Month

In June last year my family and I took a holiday to Bali, it was the second time that we had been over there and I was keen to spend a day entirely focused on photography. Thanks to a friend I was put in touch with a tour guide and amateur photographer who would be my guide for the day. I really wanted to get out to the rice terraces for sunrise so a 4:30 am start was in order to find a spot and get the good light! The first location we went to was a bit of a bust – I learnt that the terraces are constantly changing and depending on where they are in the harvest cycle will depend on what you see.

The sun was starting to come up as we drove down to a second location, I was starting to worry that we had missed the best light but Made (Mar-day) my guide was confident. Good thing that he was quick on his feet – I had stopped at one spot that was ‘ok’ and Made had gone ahead, he came back quickly – he had found the best spot! We both settled in this location as the light started to shine into the valley – there was hardly anyone around and I knew then and there that I had the shot.

2016-1023. Ubud Rice Terraces, Bali. Limited Edition Print

I must confess that I also sacrificed a good pair of shoes that day – the paths are narrow and I fell into the rice paddy’s about 5 times! Saved my gear though 🙂 You can see more of my images from Bali here.

This A3+ sized image (16×10.66 inches exact image size) comes mounted on foam core and matted to 20×16 inches. This is a standard size so it is easy to frame! This limited edition print would normally be $400 but for orders placed during the month of February it will be only $250! To order, simply message me through the contact page and let me know your address so that I can quote shipping and handling costs. Payment can be made through PayPal or direct deposit.

Dark and Stormy On Dripstone Beach

I just got my film back from the Dripstone beach shoot and there was a pleasant surprise in the negatives. I was really impressed with how dark and moody this long exposure image is! It’s similar to another shot that I’ve posted from a digital capture but there is great feel to this image.

Roots among the mangrove trees. East Point, Darwin.

Down really low, the tripod spread apart so that I can get the camera down close to the roots of the Mangrove trees that are only exposed at low tide. With the sun over my shoulder and behind clouds I could get the light into the tree without my own shadow getting in the way! I had to take this shot quickly though, my knees couldn’t take the crouching for too long and I had to be wary or crocs in this location!

Driftwood at Dripstone, Darwin NT

The waves can bring back to the land something that had found its way into the sea but perhaps only for a short period before it is swept back out again. Dripstone Beach, Darwin NT. Australia.

Long Exposure and High Tide at Dripstone, Darwin NT.

It was well and truly dark by this stage but I stayed put for one last exposure. This was taken on the landing of the stairs that you use to get down to the beach, with the sun gone I didn’t have to contend with people walking up and down the stairs and shaking the camera!

Sunset light on Dripstone Cliffs. Darwin NT Australia.

When the tide is high the water brings in a lot of sea shells but on this shoot it was the first time that I’ve seen the effect that the shells have on the out going water from the waves. These were really difficult to photograph because you’d get set up in a spot to photograph a nice cluster of shells then a large wave would come through and move them all into a different spot! I was really happy with this one shot, especially how the sun was poking through a hole in the clouds to light up the cliff in the background.

Foam on the sand, Dripstone Beach Darwin.

It’s quite odd to see the ‘beach foam’ this far away from the waters’ edge and the fact that it was sitting there undisturbed by the motion of the waves made it quite interesting. As the sun went down there was so much contrast between the foam and the sand that this scene begged to be shot in black and white. Dripstone Cliffs Beach, Darwin NT, Australia.

Dark, Stormy Sunset At Dripstone Cliffs – Darwin NT

Great clouds on the horizon last night, it was really dark at this stage but I wandered a little further away from the car to find these pools of water on the beach. Love their pattern! Dripstone Cliffs, Darwin NT.
